Squarespace recommends a PNG between 100×100 and 300×300 pixels and limits the favicon image to 100 KB. ICO uploads are not supported, so export one optimized square PNG rather than an ICO container.
If search appearance matters, choose a dimension that is also a multiple of 48, such as 96×96, 144×144, 192×192, or 288×288. Keep the outer silhouette simple because the browser still displays it near 16×16.

Use the Favicon panel
Open the Squarespace Favicon panel, drag the image into the uploader or choose a file, then save. Squarespace sites otherwise retain the recognizable default cube icon.
You may add an alternate favicon for dark mode after setting the default version. Use that option when one transparent or single-color mark loses contrast, and test both files rather than assuming automatic inversion.

Account for Safari and caching
Safari can add a border or background to improve contrast and may show the icon only in certain tab or address-bar states. That browser treatment is not necessarily evidence that Squarespace altered the source incorrectly.
When a replacement does not appear, verify the current public link and image response, then clear the browser cache and restart the browser as Squarespace recommends. Do not keep uploading duplicates before confirming which URL the page declares.
